Japan Airlines are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable travel experience for all passengers, and we appreciate your understanding and compliance with our policies. The following is an updated statement regarding Japan Airlines' policies for passengers who require additional seating due to their size:
As of 2023, Japan Airlines implemented its Plus Size Airline Policies, in response to changes in the travel industry and to ensure a more comfortable and accessible travel experience for all passengers.
Japan Airlines follows a common industry practice for overweight passengers, stating that if a passenger's body extends more than 1 inch beyond the outer edge of the armrest and requires a seat belt extender, they must purchase an additional seat.
However, this policy can create difficulties and embarrassment for many travelers, as not everyone carries a ruler and not all larger passengers need a seat belt extender. In my personal experience, some seats may require a seat belt extender, while others may not, depending on their design.
If you're looking to get a second seat for free on Japan Airlines, there isn't any information available on whether the airline provides courtesy seats. However, you can inquire at the counter if the flight has empty seats, and if there are any available, request to be relocated to a spot next to an unoccupied seat.
Alternatively, Japan Airlines offers the option of their Big Front Seat, which is situated at the front of the aircraft and provides extra legroom, a wider seat, and a greater pitch. You can purchase these seats by selecting them during seat selection or after boarding. Keep in mind that these seats come with an additional charge that ranges from $100 to $300.
If you need to reserve a second seat on Japan Airlines, you only need to enter the name of the person who requires the additional seat twice during the booking process. There's no need to include any additional notes.
However, if you're concerned about potential confusion, you can always contact Japan Customer Service and have your reservation marked accordingly.
When flying with Japan Airlines, the standard economy seat size is 17.75 inches wide, with a seat pitch of 28 inches. Alternatively, the Large Front Seat™ provides a more spacious option, with a seat size of 18.5 inches and a seat pitch of 36 inches.
If you require a seat belt extender while flying with Japan Airlines, you can request one unless you're seated in a row with inflatable seat belts. These seat belts may have an airbag or flotation device built into them and can be found in certain rows of the following aircraft types: A319 (rows 1, 4, and 5 D-F), A320 (rows 1, 3, 12, and 13), and A321 (rows 1 and 3).
To avoid these seats, Japan Airlines recommends upgrading to seat selection during the booking process. However, in our experience, flight attendants are usually willing to help you find a seat that accommodates your needs if you ask them onboard.
